Privacy policy

DRAFT PLACEHOLDER. This is not a legal document. Have this reviewed and completed against the Australian Privacy Principles before launching or running paid ads.

What we collect

When you request a quote we collect your name, phone number, optional email, and details about your vehicle (make, model, year, condition, location, optional registration) and any photos you choose to send. Photos are resized on your device with their location data removed, and stored privately so only our team can see them. We also record how you found this site (for example the ad or search that brought you here) and the type of device and browser you used. We also count visits to this site anonymously (once per browser session, with no name, IP address or cookie identifier) to understand which marketing is working.

How we use it

To give you a quote and contact you about it, to arrange collection of your vehicle with a local collection partner if you accept, to keep our business records, to protect this site from spam and misuse, and to understand which of our marketing brings people to us.

Cookies and advertising

We record which pages are viewed and which buttons are used without cookies and without your name or contact details. If you accept advertising cookies, we also use Google and Meta tags to measure which ads bring people to us. If you then request a quote, we may send Google and Meta the fact that you enquired, and later whether your enquiry progressed, together with your email address and phone number in a scrambled (hashed) form so they can match it to an ad click. We do not send them your name, vehicle details, or what we offer or pay. If you decline, nothing is sent to them. You can change your choice at any time using "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page. Google and Meta handle this information overseas, including in the United States, under their own privacy policies.

Sharing with our collection partners

When you accept a quote, we share your name, phone number, vehicle details and the car's location with a local collection partner so they can collect the vehicle.

At collection

When your vehicle is collected, our collection partner will check that you own the vehicle or are allowed to sell it. If we buy the vehicle ourselves, we may do this check too. This usually means looking at photo ID, such as your driver licence, and the vehicle's registration papers. Where the law requires it, or to complete the Queensland transfer of registration, your name, address, ID details and signature may be recorded. We don't ask you to send ID documents through this website.

Who else may see your information

Besides our collection partners, your information may be seen or handled by:

  • our own team, who sign in to our system with two-step verification
  • a tow truck operator we hire directly to collect your vehicle, who receives the details needed to collect it
  • our accountant or bookkeeper, for our business records
  • Supabase, which stores our quote requests and photos in Sydney, Australia
  • Vercel, a United States company that hosts this website (the site runs in Sydney, but Vercel may handle some data overseas)
  • Resend, a United States company that sends us an email with your details when you request a quote
  • Google and Meta, only if you accept advertising cookies (see above)
  • government agencies or police, if the law requires it

Marketing

We only use your details to deal with your quote. We don't send marketing messages, and our partners can't use your details for their own marketing.

How long we keep it

If your quote doesn't go ahead, we remove your personal details and photos 24 months after the last activity on your request. If your vehicle is sold, we keep your details until 30 June, seven years after the end of the financial year of the sale, for our tax and legal records, and then remove them. We keep vehicle details, dates and amounts without your personal details for our reports.

Seeing or correcting your information

You can ask to see the information we hold about you, or ask us to correct it. Email us at cashforqldcars@gmail.com. We'll respond in no more than 30 days.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we handle your information, email us first at cashforqldcars@gmail.com, and we'll respond in no more than 30 days. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
